Online Banking Tip: Avoiding Keyloggers
Aside from phishing, keylogging is another common way that cyber-criminals use to illegally obtain sensitive information. Keyloggers is a huge security risk that you should be aware of.
Keyloggers can be a hardware device installed between the keyboard and the CPU or a software installed into the computer. Either way, their main purpose is to capture keystrokes being typed by the user. If you have updated security software at home and at work, then there is a small chance of being victimized by this. However, you will not be doing online banking at home or at work at all times.
There will come a time you will be needing to access your online banking account from a public computer. If you do, you may be risking your security since there may be a keylogger installed in those computers. If the need is really urgent there are certain tricks you can do to "fool" a keylogger. These tips however are not bullet-proof.
- When you are to type your password, input the characters in random order and use the mouse to insert the other characters. For example, your password is 6 characters long, input the first, third, and last characters first then use the mouse to insert the second, fourth, and fifth characters.
- Most keyloggers are capable of monitoring the clipboard, so you can't copy and paste your password. Instead, type the first character, followed by several random ones. Highlight those random characters with your mouse then type the second character. Repeat the process until you have entered the last character of your password. (Learn how to protect your passwords)
- Use a portable browser. Firefox has a portable version that can run on your flash drive. At home, simply configure that portable browser into saving your passwords. When you access online banking in public computers, simply insert your flash drive and run the portable browser. Since your log-in details are already saved, you don't have to type anything else.
Of course, make sure you also regularly change your password. Since these tips are not 100 percent sure to work, changing your password as soon as you have access to a secure computer is the best way to make sure nobody else illegally accesses your account. I wish I could've read this article before my account got compromised last month because some malicious software was installed on my laptop. It could've saved me tons of trouble.on 2008-09-21 at 22:37:45
thanks for the tips. keyloggers are one of the main problems people who use internet cafes face. that is why if your account has a feature to "forget password" you should use that and then open the email where the new pasword is sent at a safe terminal.
