Credit Cards

Experts claim that the majority of Americans have one credit card or more. Yes, credit cards have been very popular through the years. It has jumped from being an alternative to a major means of payment. It has also become an important source of identification. However, not all people understand how credit cards work.

What is a credit card?

A credit card is a small plastic card used by many people as a system of payment. Credit cards are different from debit cards in that they do not remove money from the account after a transaction. Instead, the issuer (a bank, for example) lends money to the user. In theory, credit cards offer a lot of convenience financially. They allow consumers to purchase items, giving them a month before charges and interests kick in. Although it sounds good, many users are unable to use them wisely. In many cases, owning a credit card becomes a liability because people fail to pay for these purchases within a month; thus, finance charges surge up to a walloping 23 percent. Some cardholders find it so hard to resist using the “plastic” for impulsively buying items they can’t afford. Some just find themselves in huge debt to their credit provider.

How it works

It is not difficult to understand how credit cards work. First, you are issued credit after your credit provider approves your account application. Then, you will be given a card, which you will be able to use to make purchases from merchants allowing transactions with your provider.

When you purchase something using your card, you automatically agree to pay your issuer. This is because you will be asked to sign a receipt with your purchase record and card information. Today, some merchants accept electronic authorization on the Internet and verbal authorization through the phone.

Merchants verify the validity of the credit card through an electronic verification system, which will check if you have enough credit to cover your purchases. This verification can be done in just a matter of seconds using a credit card payment terminal or POS (Point of Sale) system. When it comes to online shopping, eCommerce merchants are able to verify by asking you to provide additional information like the security code or your exact address.

Every month, you will receive a statement indicating all of the purchases you have made using your card with the total amount you owe your provider. If you see anything that is incorrect, you may question the charges on it. Otherwise, you have to pay by a due date. You may also choose to skip paying that month and just pay a higher amount the next month including the monthly interest.

Credit cards are great, if you know how to control yourself. If not, then good luck. My friend accumulated over $30000 in dues because he lost track of how much he has spent.
