Union Bank of Switzerland
The Union Bank of Switzerland (known as UBS AG in Europe) is one of the world’s major financial companies headquartered in Switzerland. In fact, it is dubbed “the world’s largest manager of other people’s money” for being the biggest manager of private wealth assets in the world. It is also Europe’s second largest bank in terms of profitability and market capitalization as well as Switzerland’s largest bank, ahead of Credit Suisse. UBS has a strong presence in the United States. Its American headquarters are located in Manhattan New York; Stamford, Connecticut; and Weehawken, New Jersey. Many of the bank’s retail offices can be found across the US while others are located in more than 50 countries. UBS is organized into three global business groups: investment banking, private banking and asset management.
One Became Three Became One
UBS was originally known as a Swiss bank, starting in 1747. However, the company’s core components were only established during the second half of the 19th century. These are the Swiss Bank Corporation, Paine Webber and the Union Bank of Switzerland, all established in the 1860s and 1870s. The modern UBS was formed when the Swiss Bank and the Union Bank of Switzerland merged in June 1998. The newly formed bank was supposed to be called the “United Bank of Switzerland,” but officials chose to simply call it UBS. In 2000, the bank acquired the Paine Webber Group, making it the largest wealth management company for private clients in the world.
