Bank of America

Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Bank of America is the second largest bank in the United States. Operating over 5,700 branch offices worldwide, it offers banking, investment and loan services to businesses and individuals alike. It has reported a workforce of more than 203,425 employees and a revenue of US$ 117 billion for 2006. The bank purchased FleetBoston Financial Corporation in 2005 and acquired MBNA, a credit card company, in 2006, making it the biggest credit issuer in the US.

One Man, One Bank

The Bank of America was formed after NationsBank acquired BankAmerica in 1998. Its beginnings, however, can be traced back to 1784, right after the American Revolution. However, the real start of its operations took place in 1904. It was founded by A.P. Giannini as the Bank of Italy after being neglected by other banks in San Francisco’s Italian community. Local residents was immediately drawn by the bank because of their financial needs and social circumstances. As California grew economically as a state, the bank did, too.

In 1930, the Bank of Italy was amalgamated with the Bank of America National Trust and Savings Association. Giannini was appointed as chairman of the committee responsible for working out the details of the merger. He pursued his interest of creating a national bank with the same nature and goals as his original brainchild, the Bank of Italy. This is exactly why many people consider the story of Bank of America as the story of its founder, Giannini. The bank clearly embodies his ideas, ambitions, goals, values and personality.

Online Banking Services

The Bank of America Online Banking is open to all customers who already have an account with the bank. If you don’t have one yet, you can still sign up for an account for free nevertheless. One thing that sets this bank’s online program from its competition is that it handles bill payments differently. Usually, a truckload of data would be required. With the Bank of America, the system already knows the addresses of the commonly used payees. The program also knows the names of the key players in the community and keeps billing addresses that most clients are likely to use like cable TV, electric, utility companies, department stores and local financial institutions. Another inviting feature is that the money intended for payment is not debited until the payment comes at the billing address of the payee.

Apart from these, there are so many other benefits that the Bank of America offers. Orient yourself by browsing through their official website: https://www.bankofamerica.com. What I like about Bank of America is their concern for the environment. Last year, they presented a plan worth billions of dollars to promote environmen-friendly business practices. That tells me that the people who run it are really responsible individuals.

So how is Bank of America holding out with the current financial crisis? When banks like Bank of America struggle during economic meltdowns, what more can you expect of smaller banks? This economic crisis really gets me depressed sometimes.
